CONCORD, N.H. — Authorities have released new details as the investigation continues into a deadly neighborhood altercation in Peterborough that claimed the life of 24-year-old Jack Hutchings and left an off-duty Peterborough police officer seriously injured.
According to an update from New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall, the incident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. Sunday during an altercation involving two adult neighbors outside their residences on Grove Street in Peterborough.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite emergency response efforts, Hutchings was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities also located another adult male, identified as an off-duty officer with the Peterborough Police Department, who had sustained multiple apparent stab or incised wounds during the confrontation. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care. Officials have not released additional information regarding his condition.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on Jack Hutchings. Officials stated that the official cause and manner of death will be released after all required notifications have been made to his next of kin.
Investigators from the Attorney General’s Office, New Hampshire State Police, and other assisting agencies continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter. A key focus of the investigation is determining whether the individual who shot Hutchings acted in lawful self-defense.
At this time, authorities have not announced any criminal charges related to the incident.
