RITTMAN, Ohio — The Wayne County Coroner’s Office has identified Brandon Fazekas, 38, as the suspect in the devastating Rittman shooting that claimed the lives of Rittman Police Sgt. Scott Ries, 54, Christine McWilliams, 43, and her 13-year-old daughter, McKinley McWilliams. Fazekas was pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic incident also left four Medina/Wayne County SWAT Team members wounded and seriously injured Wayne County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Vick, sending shockwaves throughout the close-knit community.
According to authorities, the violence unfolded at approximately 9:50 p.m. Sunday after Rittman police received a 911 call reporting a break-in and shots fired at a residence located at 90 Chippewa Trail. Officers rushed to the scene, only to come under immediate gunfire upon their arrival, prompting an extensive law enforcement response involving multiple local and state agencies.
Investigators say Brandon Fazekas, identified as the suspected shooter, was found dead inside the residence. Also discovered inside the home were the bodies of his former partner, Christine McWilliams, and her daughter, McKinley McWilliams. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding what led to the deadly encounter, as investigators continue working to establish a timeline and determine the motive behind the shooting.
During the response, Sgt. Scott Ries was fatally wounded while serving in the line of duty. His death has left fellow officers, first responders, and the entire Rittman community mourning the loss of a respected law enforcement veteran who dedicated his career to protecting others.
The incident also resulted in injuries to four members of the Medina/Wayne County SWAT Team. Two officers were transported to a local hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition, while the other two officers received treatment at the scene before being released. Wayne County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Vick was also struck by gunfire during the operation and remains in serious condition. Officials have said the courageous police dog continues to receive intensive veterinary care as hopes remain high for recovery.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered all United States and Ohio flags at public buildings in Wayne County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Sgt. Scott Ries. The flags will remain lowered until sunset on the day of his funeral as a tribute to his service and sacrifice.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has assumed responsibility for leading the investigation into the officer-involved critical incident.
